Ask any Korean about fan death and they will all say it's true. Well, most will. Fan death is simple: if you wish to temp fate, close all doors and all windows, turn on a fan (apparently an AC has the same effect), and go to sleep. By morning, you will be a gonner. There are some variances amongst believers, though. Jeremy's kids told him last week that Fan Death has been revised; now you only die when you drink soju before sleeping with the fan on...
Not surprisingly, the Korean government has issued several health warnings regarding fan death. I mean, what government wouldn't warn it's people of such danger? Read it here.
If you must be more scientific, Wikipedia offers the following widely held explanations:
- That an electric fan creates a vortex, which sucks the oxygen from the enclosed and sealed room and creates a partial vacuum inside.
- That an electric fan chops up all the oxygen particles in the air leaving none to breathe.
- That if the fan is put directly in front of the face of the sleeping person, it will suck all the air away, preventing one from breathing.
Just thought I'd warn you all. I don't want any of my friends to die this summer... If you want to read more about Fan Death, read it here.
